Welcome to Quest Object Restore for Active Directory

Using Quest Object Restore for Active Directory, you can restore objects online in Active Directory.  Object Restore for Active Directory uses Microsoft's Reanimate Tombstone interface to display recently deleted objects and enables you to quickly undelete these objects with a simple right-click operation.

System Requirements

You should verify that your system meets the following minimum requirements before attempting to install and run Quest Object Restore for Active Directory 1.0:

Hardware

• Pentium 1 GHz
• 64 MB RAM (Any requirements required by a particular operating system supersede product requirements.)
• SVGA color monitor and card that support at least 800 x 600 resolution
• A pointing device
• A network card

Software

The following requirement applies to any domain you want to use Quest Object Restore for Active Directory to recover objects from:

• There must be at least one Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Domain Controller (DC) which is a member of the Active Directory domain you are performing recovery on. Use Quest Object Restore for Active Directory to connect to one of these Windows Server 2003 DCs.

Installation Notes

To completely restore a deleted object, the following permissions must be in place:

• Reanimate Tombstone control access right (granted either through your account or you are a member in a group with the permission).

• Write access for each mandatory attribute that requires updating. 

• Write access to the Relative Distinguished Name (RDN). 

• Write access to each optional attribute that needs to be updated. 

• Child-creation rights on the destination container for the object class of restored object.

Issues and Limitations

The following issues and limitations are known to exist in Quest Object Restore for Active Directory 1.0:

• Quest Object Restore for Active Directory only restores the attributes stored in the deleted object's tombstone
  Quest Object Restore for Active Directory uses Microsoft's Reanimate Tombstone API, introduced in Windows Server 2003, to undelete objects.  Given that Object Restore does not backup Active Directory attributes, only the attributes stored in the object's tombstone are recovered.  For more complete recovery of Active Directory objects, including group memberships and back-linked attributes, check out Quest Recovery Manager for Active Directory.
  
• After you restore a user or group object in Active Directory
  If you are running Quest Object Restore for Active Directory in a multi-domain forest, you must restore memberships for Domain Local groups in foreign domains (all domains other than the domain the restored object is from). This ensures the object has complete access to all resources it previously had access to.
  
• Incompatibility with Quest Reporter and Quest ActiveRoles Direct
  If either Quest Reporter or Quest ActiveRoles Direct is installed on the same machine as Quest Object Restore for Active Directory, the Object Restore MMC snap-in will not open.  To resolve this problem install Object Restore for Active Directory on a machine where neither Reporter or ActiveRoles are installed.
  
• An object cannot be restored when the tombstone lifetime for the object has expired
  The object is permanently deleted when the tombstone lifetime has expired.
  
• Objects that exist at the root of the naming context, such as a domain or application partition, cannot be restored.
  
• Schema objects cannot be restored. Schema objects should never be deleted
